Is your dog or cat continually scratching, biting, and/or licking himself?

Itching, scratching, biting can be caused by a number of things. If your pet is itchy and scratches or bites himself excessively, consult a holistic veterinarian to determine the direct cause of this behavior. Most often itchy dogs and cats are suffering from flea dermatitis, allergies, or dry skin.

Just because you don't see a flea doesn't mean they aren't or haven't been there. Dogs and cats can be itchy weeks after being bitten by a flea. Flea control is a must all year long in San Diego. We recommend treating the environment with diatomaceous earth or FleaGo. These products kill fleas by physical action, not chemical action. Our natural cedar oil spray can be applied to your dog's skin about every four days to keep the fleas from hopping on while he's out and about. Visit GreenPaws.org for more information on flea and tick control products.

If your pet is chewing his paws or scratching his face excessively consider changing to a high quality diet or switch to a novel protein. There is a big difference between surviving and thriving! Just because he's been eating the same food for the past few years doesn't mean that it's the best food for him now. Food sensitivities and allergies are commonly caused by a steady diet of the same ingredients. This can be diagnosed and avoided through education. Feed a high quality, mostly meat diet such as Primal. Use a novel protein if you've been feeding a steady diet of a common meat like beef or chicken. Eliminate wheat, corn, soy, and artificial preservatives, colorings, and additives. And finally, do add plant enzymes and probiotics and omega oils.

Both fleas and allergies can make your pet susceptible to skin infections. If your pet has red rashes, open sores, etc. see your holistic vet. If you suspect the problem is just dry skin add omega oils and bring them in to one of our locations for a self-serve dog wash with our soothing oatmeal shampoo.
